Weekly vs. Bi-Weekly Lawn Mowing: What's Right for Your Massachusetts Lawn?

When setting up a lawn care schedule, homeowners often wonder if they need weekly mowing or if bi-weekly (every other week) is sufficient. For Massachusetts lawns, the answer depends largely on the season and the weather.

During the peak growing season—typically May through June, and again in early fall—cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue grow rapidly. During these periods, weekly mowing is highly recommended. Cutting grass too infrequently means you have to cut off more than one-third of the grass blade at once, which severely stresses the plant and can lead to a brown, unhealthy lawn.

Weekly mowing also helps naturally suppress weeds by keeping the turf thick and dense, and it prevents thatch buildup. It ensures your property always maintains that crisp, freshly-manicured curb appeal.

However, during the hot, dry stretches of July and August, grass growth naturally slows down as the turf goes into a state of semi-dormancy to conserve water. During these drought periods, switching to a bi-weekly schedule may be appropriate to avoid stressing the grass further.

At Jake's Landscaping, we monitor the local growing conditions and adjust our approach accordingly. For most of our Arlington and Lexington clients, a weekly schedule provides the most consistent, healthy, and beautiful results. Contact us to discuss the best mowing plan for your property.
